Alfa Laval announces a milestone in maritime decarbonization with an order for the world’s first marine boiler system designed for the safe incineration of ammonia emissions. Confirmed for a fleet of four ammonia dual-fuel vessels, this innovation is part of a joint development project with industry frontrunners and is set for delivery in 2027-2028.

Driven by the need for decarbonization and to advance fuel flexibility, Alfa Laval is leading the way with the first fuel-flexible marine boiler solutions that can be delivered as electric hybrid or hybrid-ready boilers. This innovation supports shipowners in reducing emissions, saving fuel, and staying ahead of evolving green port regulations. Since its launch in early 2025, the solutions have generated strong interest and secured multiple orders.

Alfa Laval has completed the acquisition of UK-based NRG Marine, a leading provider of ultrasonic anti-fouling technology for marine, oil-and-gas and industrial applications. This strategic move strengthens Alfa Laval’s capabilities toward enhancing energy efficiency and operational performance while reducing costs and extending asset lifespan.

Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 Ultra is the latest ballast water management system (BWMS) built on proven PureBallast 3 technology. Just a few months after its introduction, PureBallast 3 Ultra has already secured orders from top shipyards worldwide, with deliveries set to begin in Q3 2025. The new system delivers enhanced performance, greater energy efficiency, and simplified installation.

Alfa Laval has signed its first contract for the ammonia fuel supply system, FCM Ammonia, reinforcing its position as a frontrunner in developing solutions for decarbonizing the maritime industry. The FCM Ammonia will be installed onboard seven LPG/ammonia carriers for Tianjin Southwest Maritime.

Alfa Laval has signed an agreement to acquire NRG Marine, a leading provider of ultrasonic anti-fouling solutions for marine, oil and gas, and industrial applications, headquartered in the United Kingdom. The move aligns with Alfa Laval’s strategy to provide its customers with environmentally friendly solutions contributing significantly towards improving operational efficiency, reducing costs and extending lifecycle of the asset. Closing of the acquisition is expected during Q2, 2025.

Alfa Laval has achieved a significant milestone in the development of its Gas Combustion Unit (GCU) technology for hydrogen boil-off gas, having received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society DNV.

Alfa Laval has received over 100 orders for its low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS) FCM Methanol. This achievement reflects the increasing trust shipyards and shipowners have in Alfa Laval’s fuel treatment expertise, even in handling newer fuel alternatives.

Alfa Laval will provide Rio Tinto, the world’s largest dry bulk shipper, with the OceanGlide fluidic air lubrication system. This innovative system enhances a ship’s propulsion efficiency and energy savings while sailing. Rio Tinto has selected the Alfa Laval OceanGlide fluidic air lubrication system for one of its bulk carriers, as part of its focus to boost vessel energy efficiency and decarbonize shipping. Recognizing the merits of OceanGlide in the market, the company has chosen to retrofit a Rio Tinto-owned vessel with the system to assess this energy-efficient technology for its fleet.

Alfa Laval fuel supply system FCM Methanol has been selected by Maersk for their pioneering methanol retrofit project to enable the container vessel Maersk Halifax to operate on methanol fuel. This project stands as a significant achievement for both Alfa Laval and Maersk, underscoring the feasibility of retrofitting ships with the necessary equipment for methanol-based propulsion.

Alfa Laval and Swiss engine designer WinGD have established a partnership in which Alfa Laval will deliver two fuel supply systems (FSS) for testing WinGD’s ammonia-fuelled engine in early 2024. The partnership is a significant step forward in the development of ammonia as a future fuel for marine vessels.
